Cleaning inside Olympus Zuiko OM 50mm 1.8 Auto-S

I will preface this with there are many version of the OM 50mm and some have different front plates. This will not apply to all 50mm lenses. I have been reading online about cleaning OM lenses..

The 50mm F1.4 is cheap and plentiful on Ebay, probably not worth the bother or messing about trying to repair it yourself, just get a “like new” version off Ebay.”

For the price of a “new” 50mm 1.4 why bother? The proper tools will cost more than the lens is worth.”

So I had to post something about the take apart and illustrate you don’t have to buy a bunch of tools. Chances are you have them sitting around the house. I used a simple metal pick to pull off the front plate. Be careful not to scratch the black paint. You will see two indents around the ring pop the pick in there and with downward pressure move the ring counter-clockwise. The ring should then slide out and the lens plate should come with it. If you don’t have a metal pick use a paperclip. Just be more careful with the paperclip.

After that the center lenses that are cemented together should come out without any force. [Three philips screws] After that you should be able to clean anywhere dust should get in. Be careful now that it’s open not to get more dust in. Work in a clean area and use can air before you put it back together.

After that put it all back together without any damage you just cleaned the lens. Not that hard… Fixing the blades was a different story. I took my other 50mm 1.8 apart for another project I am working on. I’ll post more on that when its good and done.

All photos were taken with the Olympus E-1 or E-510, 50mm F2.0 and FL-50.

Canadian $

wow,  “Canadians that decide to do some cross-border shopping are benefiting, the increasing popularity of the Internet makes it possible for Canadian to buy things from vendors abroad and to that extent they can benefit 100 per cent from the appreciation of the Canadian dollar.”

So this poses a VERY interesting challenge for Canadian retailers and US suppliers. Match US prices and  put pressure on suppliers to catch up? Loose some sales to the internet [nothing new to camera retail customers] and off sell on the benefit of shopping locally? I expect something to happen at the federal level as a reaction to this news within the next week [a hot button for jim flaherty no doubt]. For my generation this is something I didn’t know we would ever see.  As a retailer it means coming up with some new ideas for making it work.
At the time of this post the exchange at xe.com is 1.00144. I will keep this short as it is a full 180 from normal posts here. I just find it very exciting/scary news. Prices are going to go up for something as not everything we buy comes from the US and they are a big trade partner so could hurt Canada exports…yaddda yadda yaddda you get the idea
Very interesting…. or very scary depending on how you look at it.

Third time is a charm : Leaving McBain

Third time is a charm.

Yep thats right I will no longer be a McBain camera employee come the end of the month. It ends a long run of playing part time Camera Geek at McBain. I have met and worked with some of the best people in this city. I take this time to thank all the staff at WEM McBain for prolonging my time at McBain by making it a wicked place to work. After Sept if you want new gear or if Olympus doesn’t put up and you just want to go Nikon/Ca [I can't even say it] talk to Ian Sheh or Nicole M. They both rock and would be happy to help you out.

Whats next?

Check back in two weeks. I’ll keep you posted.

So no more photography?

Couldn’t be more from the truth. More on that in two weeks, but by no stretch of the imagination does this mean that things are going to slow down. Just time to change focus and face the economic reality. This refocus allows me to catch up on some ideas and do what I love to do. There is wack of emerging tech and it’s not showing signs of slowing down. Ideas are over taking distribution and presentation of traditional media. It’s going to be a big shift in the next five years and I want to make sure I am part of that wave.

Thanks to my customers for all the support and if you have any questions you can still reach me at j[@]jonathanpuckrin.com
